Greetings -
I'll be the first to admit it: when I hear the words "charity," "pledge," or "fundraising," I am the type to just whip out the checkbook or credit card, not actually get involved in, you know, doing anything. I've decided, on a one-time basis, to change that. Please don't mistake me for a do-gooder or anything like that, ok? It's just not in the cards.
Here's the deal: Greenhill Humane Society is our local (Eugene, OR) animal shelter. They do wonderful, important work both for the animals and for our community. As you might assume, a local economy that depends a lot on the wood products industry has taken it squarely on the chin when the rest of the country stops building homes: no new homes, reduced demand for wood, the mills idled: the result is layoffs cascading through our county, where the unemployment rate now tops 13%. One of the first things to go when the family budget gets hit are the pets - they are abandoned, given up, neglected - you name it. Greenhill steps in to help out when nobody else can.
It might surprise a lot of you to know that your friend, the former two-pack-a-day, 100 pound overweight sloth artist formerly (and still) known as yours truly dropped the smokes, the weight, and took up - gasp- running! Now, I'm addicted. The best part is it is something I get to share with my dogs, who often run at my side, when I can convince them that going forward is far more interesting than a scent left path-side by some hot bitch (apple doesn't fall far from the tree, baby) last Thursday. Next Sunday, I am going to run a 5k with my Schnauzer, Winston to help raise money for Greenhill.
Times are tough, resources are scarce, money is tight: if you can find it in your heart and your pocket-book to spare a latte, a cocktail, or any small indulgence and instead make a donation to the folks at Greenhill, I would appreciate it, and I know they would, too. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this drivel and please consider donating to this worthy organization.
Cheers,
David
